Fuel Cell Vehicles

Ballard Power Systems

Ballard will provide three 205kW heavy duty fuel cell engines to EvoBus for integration into Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses for the public transportation system in Perth, Western Austrailia. The buses will arrive in the first half of 2004 and will be put into use in the second half of 2004. This will serve as part of a two year demonstration on fuel cell powered vehicles. Balard also sent three Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses powered with Ballard fuel cells to the Public Transport authority in London. The city of London will operate the Ballard powered fuel cell buses on a central London bus route. This will begin in January 2004 as part of the Clean Urban Transport for Europe(CUTE) project.

Enova Systems

The US Air Force fuel cell bus is a success. Along with Enova Systems they have successfuly integrated a fuel cell system into the US Air Force's first fuel cell hybrid bus at Enova Systems' facilities in Honolulu, Hawaii. The partners on the hybrid bus were Enova, US Air Force, and The State of Hawaii's High Technology Development Corporation(HTDC) and Hydrogenics.

Amsterdam Transit Authority

GVB, the transit authority of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, began operating four hydrogen-fueled buses ib the northern part of the city. The buses extract hydrogen from the water tanks on the roof of the buses, each capable of supplying the buses for 250 kilometers (155 miles). The two year project will cost 7 million Euros(8.6million US). The funding will be supplied by the European Union, The Dutch Transport Ministryand the Amsterdam councel. Also helping with the project are DaimlerChrysler, Hoek Loos, Nuon, Shell, and the Netherlands Agency for Energy and the Environment.

Proton Energy Systems, Inc.

Proton Energy wins wins two SBIR( Small Business Innovative Research) Phase II awards. They were awarded a SBIR contract from NASA for development of lightweight unitized regenerative fuel cell technology for unmanned arial vehicles. Proton also received an SBIR Phase I contract from the US Army Missile Defense Agency(MDA) for development of lightweight regenerative fuel cell technology for high altitude airships.
