The Cape Lookout Renewable Energy System

The Cape Lookout Coast Guard Renewable Energy System uses a Bergey 850 Watt Wind Generator, and 600 Watts of Solarex Solar Panels to charge two battery banks. The batteries have a total capacity of 3000 Amp Hours, and the system uses a Heart Inverter to produce 120Vrms 60 Hz AC electricity.

This website documents the experience gained at the "Introduction to Small Wind Energy Systems" workshop presented by the NC Solar Center May 8 - 11, 2003.

Special Thanks to the NC Solar Center and State Energy Office, NC department of Administration., and The North Carolina Maritime Museum Beaufort, and Cape Lookout, NC.

The Wind Generator is mounted on top of an 84 ft. Tilt-up tower.

Our group was provided a tour of the entire renewable energy system that powers the station. Click here to tour the Renewable Energy system

After a very informative class at the museum and the tour of the system, our first objective on the island was to lower the tower, perform some routine maintenance to the wind generator, and install an NRG Systems Anemometer Click here to tilt the tower and learn about the Bergy 850 Wind Generator
